“Dear Doula…”

Dear Doula…

“What’s a doula?” you ask,

Dou·la /ˈdo͞olə/: Noun

A doula is a birth assistant, coach, or companion who provides guidance and support before, during and after a birth,  miscarriage, stillbirth, or abortion. While they have no formal medical training, there are training and certifications for doulas, like the one at The Doula Project, whose website states that a doula “provides free compassionate care and emotional, physical, and informational support to people across the spectrum of pregnancy.” The Project’s admirable vision statement states;

“The Doula Project works to create a society in which all pregnant people have access to the care and support they need during their pregnancies and the ability to make healthy decisions for themselves, whether they face birth, miscarriage, stillbirth, fetal anomaly, or abortion.”

In the spirit of support and compassion, we offer the “Dear Doula” Q & A section as a confidential, safe place to ask any questions relating to reproductive health and the relationships surrounding it. Our panel of empathetic and well-resourced volunteers will deliver the best answers they can ferret out, and entertain in the attempt.

Please understand that this section is not intended as medical advice and individuals need to consult with professionals.

We DO have a resource page for your assistance, and we welcome suggestions!
